Since his late teens, Bernie became conscious of the effects of not eating properly, exercising enough, or knowing how to relieve his stress. From that time,  he taught himself all he could about natural hygiene by studying herbology, nutrition, fitness, yoga, and fasting with the leading proponents in this field such as Viktoras Kulvinskas, Dr. Bernard Jensen, and David Wolfe.

Resolving to make this his life's work, Bernie studied to become a licensed massage and colon therapist at Gainesville's Florida School of Massage.
